About Bulgaria: Holidays and Customs

Under Communism Bulgarians were not allowed to celebrate religious holidays. But they still managed to keep their traditions. Many holidays have religious roots. Bulgarians are also very proud of their heritage and history. Most Bulgarians will recite the story of the Turkish Yoke, and Communist oppression without hesitation.

Major Holidays

  • New Year's Day: January 1 & 2
  • Baba Mart: March 1
  • Liberation Day: March 3
  • Women's Day: March 8
  • Bulgarian History and Culture: May 24
  • Budni Vechera (Christmas Eve): December 24
  • Christmas: December 25 & 26

Other Celebrations

  • Birthdays: The birthday person gives chocolates to friends
  • Name Days: Similar to Saint Days, celebrated with parties and friends.

Customs

Bulgarians have many social customs that missionaries might find strange. For example, you nod your head 'no' and shake your head 'yes.' It is also considered rude to put your hand bag or back pack on the floor.
