Hey, do missionaries get dictionaries issued to them when they arrive at the mtc, or do we need to get our own?  How does that work out?  Smiley

Thank you everyone!

When I was in the MTC, they gave us all a little pocket dictionary. It wasn't the greatest dictionary, but good enough for what I needed in the MTC. After I arrived in the country, I did as most missionaries do and purchased a bigger, better dictionary.

Actually, I ended up with several dictionaries: a Bulgarian->English dictionary, an English->Bulgarian dictionary, a better pocket dictionary, and eventually even graduated to a pure Bulgarian-only dictionary.

FYI for all of the newbies...looks like a new group is forming for March 2010...

They give you everything you need in the MTC as far as books and missionary materials go.  The only thing you really need to bring are your own English scriptures.  You'll get PMG, Bulgarian language books, dictionary, and Bulgarian Scriptures in your packet.

The other dictionary you might want to look out for when you get to BG is the "Pravogovoren Rechnick" or correct speaking dictionary.  It has every verb conjugated in every verb tense, every noun and pronoun declined correctly.  It was and still is by far my most helpful referrence book.

Good luck.

Yes, I would second Brinton's Pravogovoren Rechnick recommendation. It's invaluable if you really want to be a good Bulgarian speaker.
